A neutral, sourced look at the AI tools accounting, CPA and bookkeeping firms actually use. Nobody pays to be listed or ranked.
The big one: TaxDome now prices by client, not by seat
- New: one plan from $1,500/year, with a 150-active-client minimum and 20 seats included. For example, 400 clients cost $4,125/yr and 1,000 clients cost $9,000/yr. Billing is annual only.
- Before (Oct 29): Essentials $800, Pro $1,000 and Business $1,200 per seat per year.
- AI is a separate $200/month add-on. It covers AI document organization, AI return delivery, and MCP/API access.
- If you're a customer: TaxDome says your current price holds until your first renewal on or after Jan 1. Count your active clients now. A large staff with few clients comes out ahead; a small team with lots of 1040s may not. (TaxDome pricing) → TaxDome on ProofColumn
What changed
- TaxDome opened a public API and MCP server (Oct 29). You can connect Claude or ChatGPT to your TaxDome data, and owners choose read-only or read/write access by area. It's rolling out over the coming weeks. (PR Newswire) → listing
- Microsoft added accounting skills to Copilot in Excel (Oct 29): reconciliations, draft journal entries, variance write-ups, and audit/tax workpapers. They're in Frontier (early access) for now, with QuickBooks and Xero plugins. Microsoft says your prompts and files aren't used to train its models. (Microsoft) → listing
- CCH Axcess went agentic (Oct 23–26). It now prepares 1040s from client documents and prior-year/K-1 data, builds Tax Planner recommendations from a finished return, and runs audit agents that flag risks for planning. (Wolters Kluwer) → listing
- Intuit announced Agentic Books Close for Accountant Suite (Oct 27). It runs the monthly close to your firm's SOPs, keeps an audit log, and leaves approval to you. It's a paid add-on marked "coming soon" and is still in pilot. (Intuit) → listing
- Yooz now codes non-PO invoice lines (Oct 21). It fills in high-confidence lines itself, suggests medium-confidence ones, and leaves low-confidence lines to you. (Yooz) → listing
Data-use watch
- Basis revised its privacy policy on Oct 29. The new text says Google user data isn't used to train any AI model and that AI model providers can't train on it. Our rating stays "doesn't train." (Basis) → listing
- Directory-wide, 15 vendors now say they don't train on customer data, 5 say they do in some form, and 42 of 62 don't say clearly.
New in the directory
- IRIS Document Management launched today (Nov 2) for UK and US firms. It does AI plain-language search, OCR, auto-tagging, auto-filing rules and a branded client portal. IRIS says client data is never used to train AI models. Pricing is demo-only. (IRIS) → listing
One thing to do this week
If you're on TaxDome, pull your active-client count for the last 12 months and price it on the new slider before your renewal conversation.
